Bessie Botha lives on a smallholding outside Bloemfontein with her brother, Willem. 1974 has not been a good year, and to top it all, her late husband Stefaans’s wealthy brother and his young swanky wife are on their way to visit.
Bessie takes an interest in all the outcasts of the neighbourhood, whether it is a neglected animal or a young child in need of a hug or a cup of tea.
